Let’s face it. The Mint Julep is the dorky uncle of spring cocktails. Was it just a way to make 1700’s era whiskey tolerable to drink in the heat of a Kentucky summer? Drunkenly stumbling upon a patch of mint and thinking, “Sure, why not?” Yet, there’s still something about the cool sweet minty bourbon that brings us back to good times- fancy hats, colorful dresses and graceful horses and so forth. So, how do we spice up those good times? By adding something spicy. Duh. Introducing the Mint Julep that went east. Ginger and peppercorn team up to add just the right touch to light this Derby tradition on fire.
East Meets West Recipe
2oz bourbon
3/4 oz Metropole ginger syrup
1/2 oz Szechuan peppercorn syrup
4-6 mint leaves
Muddle the mint, add the syrups and bourbon, then fill the glass halfway with ice. Stir until a nice bit of frost develops on the outside of the glass. Add more ice. Garnish with candied ginger and a mint sprig.
