21c Museum Presents The Necks, with Special Guests The Sandpaper Dolls
September 15, 2011 @ 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
The Necks are one of the great cult bands of Australia. Chris Abrahams (piano), Tony Buck (drums) and Lloyd Swanton (bass) conjure a chemistry together that defies description in orthodox terms. Pieces slowly unravel in a most mesmerizing fashion underpinned by an insistent deep groove. The deceptive simplicity of their music throws forth new charms on each hearing. Not entirely avant-garde, nor minimalist, nor ambient, nor jazz, the music of The Necks is unique in the world today.
The Sandpaper Dolls are an a cappella collaboration between Suki Anderson, Rebecca Dennison and Amber Estes. They rely on their voices to conduct a unique musical experiment. You may recognize these three from such varied projects as a.m. Sunday, Liberation Prophecy, and Jamie Barnes’ Deepest Apologies. The Sandpaper Dolls have collaborated with several local artists on upcoming projects, including The Commonwealth’s Daniel Duncan and Alan Lomax, denizen Nathan Salsburg, and have recently shared the local stage with Graciela Perrone and Cinemanonymous.
