21c Durham Raises Robert Longo’s “Untitled (Dividing Time)” Flag in Tandem with Creative Time

This morning at 10 a.m., in partnership with Creative Time, 21c Museum Hotel Durham hoisted the fourth public artwork in the nationwide Pledges of Allegiance series, Untitled (Dividing Time), by artist Robert Longo.

“I created this flag for Creative Time’s Pledges of Allegiance project based on a large-scale charcoal drawing I completed on the day of the most recent presidential election. The drawing, U ntitled (Nov. 8, 2016), consists of a left and right panel, with five inches separating them,” said artist Robert Longo. “I chose to draw the right panel larger but with fewer stars; my intention is to present the current symptomatic divide in the United States.”

Longo’s Pledges of Allegiance flag is based on the artist’s 2016 large-scale charcoal drawing, exhibited in Longo’s “The Destroyer Cycle” exhibition at Metro Pictures in New York City. The drawing titled Untitled (Nov. 8, 2016) was completed the day of the recent presidential election. The two-panel drawing of the American flag is separated by five inches between the left panel and right panel, the latter measures slightly larger than the former. This monumental work reflects the current symptomatic divide in the United States.

As part of 21c’s partnership with Creative Time, a new artist-designed flag will be installed at 21c Durham on the same day the flag is raised at Creative Time headquarters in New York City and at other partner sites for the next six months.

In a gesture of solidarity, the flag will be raised simultaneously at the following ten locations: Creative Time headquarters at 59 E 4th Street and Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Ridgefield, CT, Brooklyn Museum in Brooklyn, NY, Herbert F Johnson Museum of Art at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, Kemper Art Museum at Washington University in St. Louis, Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD) in Detroit, MI, RISD Museum at Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, RI, University of South Florida Contemporary Art Museum, KMAC Museum in Louisville, KY and 21c Museum Hotel in Durham, North Carolina. Longo’s flag will fly for the remainder of the month before being replaced by the next Pledges of Allegiance flag.
