Take time for yourself

FAQ on Massage Therapy

Let’s face it — life is busy and it can be easy to forget to take time for yourself. We think that should change. To help build our case, we asked 21c’s Senior Director of Spa + Wellness, Natasha Burns, to answer some FAQ’s around massage therapy and self care.

Q: What are some health benefits of massage therapy outside of stress relief?

Natasha: There are many preventative health benefits to massage therapy, including:

  • Boosts immunity to help fight viruses
  • Improves mental health and self esteem
  • Increases circulation and sharpens brain function
  • Removes toxins by releasing lactic acid buildup in the muscles
  • Boosts happiness and energy by decreasing Cortisol levels and increasing serotonin in the brain
  • Helps to relieve headache pain for those suffering with tension headaches
  • And improves sleep

Q: I’ve never had a massage before — what should I expect during my session?

Natasha: To start, you will be asked to fill out a consultation form, which will tell your provider a little bit about yourself and your preferences. After you’ve settle into your Spa suite, the provider will meet with you for a short verbal consultation to better understand what you would like to take away from your session. During your massage, you will have the option to disrobe to your comfort level and will be draped at all times. At any time, if you feel as if you need more or less pressure, please communicate to your provider so that they can adjust accordingly. After your massage, you will have the option to use the steam shower located in your Spa suite, which we highly recommend! Steam after a massage helps to release the toxins from your body. And most importantly…be sure to drink plenty of water before and after the massage to help with the detoxification process.

Q: How often should I get a massage?

Natasha: We typically recommend once a week, but you can build your way up to that. If you are new to massage, start by getting a massage once a month. If you are already doing that, then bump it up to every other week. We offer a series package, which includes 5 massages for the price of 4.

Q: What is your favorite type of massage?

Natasha: My favorite is the Aromatouch Ritual, which takes you through a series of 8 different essential oils to help decrease stress, muscle tension and inflammation, and achieve balance throughout the whole body. The service concludes with a full body relaxing massage and steam for total detoxification.
