April’s installment of the Sunday Film Screening Series on 04.27.2014 will feature Stacey Steers film Night Hunter, a series of animations by Sandra Ramos, as well as an Art21 exclusive, dolefullhouse.

In this handmade film, composed of more than four thousand collages, the actress Lillian Gish is seamlessly appropriated from silent-era cinema and plunged into a new and haunting role. Night Hunter evokes a disquieting dreamscape, drawn from allegory, myth, and archetype. Music and sound by Larry Polansky.

About the artist: Stacey Steers makes labor-intensive films composed of thousands of individual, handmade works on paper. Her animations have screened at the Sundance Film Festival, Telluride Film Festival, New Directors New Films in NYC and the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., along with numerous other screenings worldwide, winning national and international awards. Recently she has begun expanding her work to include installations that reflect on and bring focus to the films by placing production elements and/or film loops in a new context. Her work has been installed at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, D.C., the Denver Art Museum, and the Hamburger Kunsthalle in Hamburg, Germany among others. Steers is a recipient of major grants from Creative Capital and the American Film Institute. She has been an artist fellow at Harvard University, the MacDowell Colony, the Sacatar Foundation, Ucross Foundation, the Liguria Study Center and Yaddo. She lives and works in Boulder, Colorado.

About the artist: Sandra Ramos’s visual vocabulary of images drawn from literary, historical, and personal sources, expresses the dreams, desires, and challenges she faces as an artist in contemporary Cuba. Paradox and contradiction abound—in both the artist’s imagination and in lived reality: the surrounding ocean connects and isolates, and the waters both create and destroy life. “Physical shipwreck, sentimental shipwreck, economic shipwreck, political shipwreck,” says Ramos, recur thematically in works such as Naufragio. And while these animated narratives occur in the seemingly infinite realms of the ocean and the cosmos, barriers to escape, to change, persist; we remain suspended in a world of illusion. Sistema Solar presents two parallel universes: one, the recognizable planets in orbit, and one in which the planets have transformed into historical and fictional characters such as Washington, Marx, Lenin, Castro, and la pionerita, circling an old man, all of whom are revealed as illusory inhabitants of a now-archaic television set, perhaps controlled by the figure of la pionerita.

Art21 Exclusive: dolefullhouse, 2007
Filmed in 2010 at 601Artspace in New York and Parasol Unit in London, Tabaimo discusses her animated video installation dolefullhouse. The Japanese artist did not begin working on the artwork with a preconceived idea but rather started by adding disparate elements to the animation that then formed meaning through their interactions. Tabaimo asks that viewers do not seek to understand her intentions behind dolefullhouse but instead create their own interpretations.
