Please join 21c Louisville for the closing reception of solo exhibition The Little Mercies from Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist, Jon Cherry. About The Little Mercies

A complicated state history informs an even more complex present. Possible meanings of the word “Kentucky” are of indigenous American origin, reflecting both suffering and hope: in Cherokee, “Dark and Bloody Ground,” and in Wyandot, “Land of Tomorrow.” This spectrum, of experiences continued and converged in the state, as nationwide racial justice protests, economic hardship, and environmental destruction, all within the framework of a deathly and unrelenting global pandemic, reached and maintained profoundly palpable levels of reckoning in Kentucky. Jon Cherry: The Little Mercies is a state-as-subject portrait of our complicatedly beautiful, struggling yet triumphant, deeply resilient contemporary commonwealth, capturing lived experience of Kentuckians. Whether documenting a disaster or an individual’s success, Cherry’s storytelling is one of shared humanity.

About Jon Cherry

Jon Cherry is a Pulitzer Prize awarded American photojournalist whose work has spanned a wide range of photographic disciplines. His style has been described as deeply romantic, yet joyful. Born in Fort Liberty, North Carolina, Cherry now proudly calls himself a Kentuckian. Cherry aims to capture the spirit of America while developing his storytelling craft through analysis of the truths that define our time. Cherry can be labeled a generalist, reporting on topics from extremism and government to agriculture and conservation with the intention of blurring the lines between visual reportage and fine art photography.
