Irrepressible: The Jazz Age Life of Henrietta Bingham

September 24, 2015 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Free and open to the public

A book talk and signing with Emily Bingham

21c Museum Hotel Louisville and The Filson Historical Society are proud to present an evening with Emily Bingham exploring her new book Irrepressible: The Jazz Age Life of Henrietta Bingham, including stories of her great-aunt’s relationships with the artistic members of the Bloomsbury group. Acclaimed vocalist Cheyenne Mize will also recreate Henrietta’s 1923 London performance of “Water Boy,” later recorded by Odetta and Paul Robeson. Proof on Main will serve the Hanky Panky cocktail, a Savoy Hotel staple that was created by Ada Coleman, the first and only female bar manager and a figure Henrietta would have encountered on her many nights at the Savoy.

About Irrepressible: The Jazz Age Life of Henrietta Bingham: Henrietta Bingham rode the cultural cusp as a muse to the Bloomsbury group, the daughter of the ambassador to England during the rise of Nazism, the seductress of royalty and athletic champions, and a pre-Stonewall figure who never buckled to convention. But her great niece, biographer and historian Emily Bingham, knew none of that growing up. The secret of who her great-aunt was, and just why her story was buried for so long led to Irrepressible.

Called “haunting” by The New Yorker and “hard to resist” by The New York Times Book Review, Irrepressible will be available for purchase and signing by the author during the event.

Event is free and open to the public. For our guests’ convenience, $6 valet parking available on 7th street between Main and Market streets.
