Global Folk Music Interactive

June 7, 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Free and open to the public

Immerse yourself in the music and dance of Africa, Latin America, and Kentucky with members of Louisville’s global community at this event at 21c Museum Hotel Louisville. We will enjoy music and dance interactive performances with Hamidou Koivogui and Gregory Acker (Guinean drum and dance), Fernando Moya and Zenon Llusco (Andean folk music) with Caleb Leiva (El Salvador), and Louisville Folk School teachers David Brooks and Tom Cunningham (Bluegrass/ Old Time) with square dance caller Chet Gray. The audience will be invited to join a circle with the performers to share the experience of creating music and dance together, and discovering cultural connections. As part of the “I Am Ali” Festival, this event celebrates Muhammad Ali’s legacy as a global citizen, athlete, and humanitarian. Event is free and open to all ages. Light refreshments and a cash bar will be provided.

We encourage you to arrive early or stay after the program to view the newest exhibition at 21c Louisville, Dress Up, Speak Up: Costume and Confrontation. With more than 35 participating artists representing 22 nationalities, Dress Up, Speak Up delivers a global investigation of the role of costuming, iconography, and performance in constructing identity and confronting history.

Presented in partnership with Jefferson Community Technical College International Student Services, Kentucky Refugee Ministries, Louisville Metro Office for Globalization, and the Muhammad Ali Center.
