Jennifer Reeder constructs personal films about relationships, trauma and coping. Her award-winning narratives are innovative and borrow from a range of forms including after school specials, amateur music videos and magical realism. These films have shown widely, including the Sundance Film Festival, the Berlin Film Festival, the Venice Biennale, and the Whitney Biennial.

Reeder’s most recent short film, Blood Below the Skin, premiered at the 2015 Berlin Film Festival, and won Best of the Fest at the Chicago Underground Film Festival. Another recently completed short film, A Million Miles Away, screened at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival. It premiered at the 2014 Rotterdam Film Festival and was nominated for a Tiger award. It has won numerous awards nationally and internationally including the Zonta Award at Oberhausen, a directing award at Vienna Shorts and the Eileen Maitland award at the Ann Arbor Film Festival. A Million Miles Away also won the grand prize at the Encounters film festival in the UK and the Kurzfilmtage Winterthur, both of which qualified it for Oscar nomination consideration.

Reeder is currently in development on two new films: As With Knives and Skin, a teen feature-length film set in rural Kentucky called; and All Small Bodies, a speculative fictional take on Hansel and Gretel. She recently founded a social justice initiative called Tracers Book Club, which was featured recently at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago and won a Propeller Fund Grant for a year of radical programming around the theme of “women’s work.”

Reeder received an MFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She is currently an Associate Professor in Moving Image and the Head of the Art Department in the School of Art and Art History at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She lives in Indiana with her three young children.

About the Lexington Film League Showcase
The Lexington Film League Showcase at 21c Museum Hotel Lexington presents monthly programs that reflect the richness and diversity of contemporary film and video practice in the region and the world. The programs will include new works made by young artists, important works made by living artists, and historical works made by marginalized artists, including various media including single-channel films and videos, as well as performances. The programs include works that reference different genres, including abstract, non-narrative, documentary, and fictional works. The Showcase presents important film and video works that are not currently available in the area, and promotes Lexington and 21c as a venue for artistic film and video work.

LexArts has provided funding support for Lexington Film League Showcase at 21c through its Fund for the Arts.
