Penelope’s Room Closing Reception
December 1, 2017 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Free and open to the publicPlease join us for a closing reception of Penelope’s Room by artist Elizabeth Chabot, a large-scale installation transforming a room of 21c’s historic bank vault into a woven chamber. It is a sanctuary. Visitors are encouraged to walk through, touch, and embrace the piece. The title refers to Penelope, wife of Odysseus, who nightly picked apart the burial shroud she wove in her husband’s absence to prevent having to remarry after his assumed death.
Elizabeth Chabot is a self-taught weaver and fiber artist. She makes hand-woven textiles, wall hangings, and art pieces focusing on an intermixture of textures along with found and repurposed materials. Born and raised in Virginia, Elizabeth now lives and works in Durham, North Carolina.
This installation was made possible through generous support from The Carrack, a zero-commission community art space, and Indio, a store for beautiful goods and gifts. With material donation from Spoonflower and crowdfunding support from more than 30 individuals.
