Artist Talk: Emily Hanako Momohara
June 27, 2014 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
free and open to the publicJoin 21c for an artist talk with Emily Hanako Momohara as she discusses her work Koden. Momohara creates work in which her Japanese American upbringing is a defining characteristic. The work investigates experiences of loss, legacy and discovery. She will discuss her work from Koden featured in Blue: Matter, Mood and Melancholy as well as newer video and photography projects. Through the use of tableaus in funeral home locations, she created Koden by using self-portraits that represent haunting aspects of those who have passed on. The blend of Asian and American symbolism compliments each other in the images. Likewise, the photographs created in homage are full of the dichotomies that life and death offer. Her latest work Islands, is an extension of her desire to connect to the past. However, Momohara uses landscape in combination with symbolism to describe culture and legacy.
