Opening Reception for The Future is Female
January 17, 2019 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Free and open to the publicPlease join us for the opening reception of The Future is Female. Enjoy a cocktail reception at 6pm with remarks by Chief Curator Alice Gray Stites, followed by a special presentation by featured artist Saya Woolfalk.
ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
Gleaming acrylic fingernails glued into reptilian forms that emerge from the wall; barnacles and ceramic teeth encrusted in life-size human figures in decay; female anatomy rendered in neon light and boxing gloves; cement seeping through lace and paint; haunting words about the present overlaid on imagery of the past: surface tension abounds in this exploration of contemporary feminist art. Investigating identity, consumer culture, ecology, history, mythology, and power, the art featured in The Future is Female illuminates both the consequences and the persistence of the struggle for equality.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Saya Woolfalk uses science fiction and fantasy to re-imagine and re-create the world in multiple dimensions. Her world of the Empathics, a fictional race of women who are able to alter their genetic make-up and fuse with plants, builds the narrative of these women’s lives and questions the utopian possibilities of cultural hybridity. Based in New York, Woolfalk has exhibited at museums worldwide. She is represented by Leslie Tonkonow Artworks + Projects, NYC and teaches in the BFA and MFA programs at Parsons: The New School for Design.
