ABOUT THE ARTIST
Travis Somerville is a multimedia artist whose work explores the complexities of racism and serves as a point of departure for discussion about U.S. oppression and colonial attitudes abroad, presenting images of political and cultural icons associated with the history of the American South. Somerville has been included in numerous museum exhibitions including at The University of Georgia, Athens, GA; Laguna Art Museum, Laguna Beach, CA; The Bass Museum, Miami Beach, FL; Frederick Weisman Art Museum, Minneapolis, MN; Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC; and Los Angeles County Museum of Art, CA; among others. His work is included in numerous collections including SF MoMA, The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, and the Walker Art Center, among others. In 2018, as part of the ForFreedoms 50 State Initiative, Somerville created a billboard design that currently on view in Greensboro, NC.
