Artist Talk with Anthony Goicolea
October 7, 2016 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Free and open to the public21c Museum Hotel Bentonville is pleased to host a lecture by multimedia artist Anthony Goicolea. A first-generation Cuban American now living and working in Brooklyn, New York, Goicolea samples deftly from myriad cultural sources—religion, science fiction, fairy tales, history, and current events—in his alluring, uncanny meditations on self, psyche, memory, and longing. Prolific and visionary, Goicolea creates photographs, paintings and drawings, sculpture, video, and installation art that illuminate the most profound use of enchantment: to tell the deepest truths. The artist’s subject matter is at once personal and universal, ranging from adolescent rites of passage to family history to environmental decay. Anthony Goicolea’s art has been exhibited and collected by institutions worldwide, including The Guggenheim Museum, The Whitney Museum of Art, The Brooklyn Museum, MoMA, The Chicago Museum of Contemporary Photography, The Hirshhorn Museum, The North Carolina Museum of Art, The ASU Museum of Art, The Miami Art Museum, The Helmond and the Groninger Museum in the Netherlands, The Herbert Johnson Museum of Art at Cornell University, El Museo de Arte Contemporaneo de Castilla in Leon, Spain, The Yale University Collection,as well as 21c Museum Hotel Louisville, Cincinnati, Bentonville, Durham, and Lexington. In 2011-12, 21c and The North Carolina Museum of Art and Telfair Museums co-organized the artist’s mid-career survey, Alter Ego: A Decade of Work by Anthony Goicolea.
