About the Exhibition
The annual IdeaFestival celebrates innovation, bringing dynamic, ground-breaking leaders in a wide range of disciplines to Louisville from all over the world. Working at the intersections of art and science are the five creative innovators whose works are on view here. Addressing the evolution of the universe, memory loss, race and history, and more, they explore some of today’s most compelling issues, offering unique perspectives and potential solutions. Since 2009, 21c has organized an annual exhibition of works created by the artists invited to present at Idea Festival.
On Friday, October 2, the IdeaFestival will welcome painter, sculptor, installation artist, and filmmaker, Titus Kaphar. He will speak about his work, which demonstrates a deep engagement with American history and culture and the intersection of the personal and political.
Titus Kaphar received an MFA from the Yale School of Art, is a distinguished recipient of the Gwendolyn Knight and Jacob Lawrence Fellowship and is a 2015 grantee of the Creative Capital Foundation. In late 2014, TIME magazine commissioned Kaphar to create an artwork in response to protests in Ferguson, Missouri. He was born in 1976 in Kalamazoo, Michigan and currently lives and works between New York and Connecticut.
The Creative Capital Foundation supports innovative and adventurous artists through funding, counseling, and career development services. A pioneering approach, inspired by venture-capital principles, helps artists working in all creative disciplines realize their visions and build sustainable practices. Four recent Creative Capital grantees, Ken Gonzales-Day, Kelly Heaton, Andy Kropa, and Miwa Matreyek, whose works are on view here, will discuss their projects during the IdeaFestival 2015 Art @ The Edge presentation on October 1.
