About the Exhibition

A true icon of American Pop Art, LOVE was originally commissioned by the Museum of Modern Art for a Christmas card design in 1964. The artist then transformed his signature stacked text into a series of sculptures, which have since been installed in cities all over the world. The original belongs to the collection of the Indianapolis Museum of Art. Born Robert Clark in 1928, the artist moved to New York City in 1954 and adopted the surname of his home state to distinguish himself among his notable peers—Willem de Kooning Robert Rauschenberg, Ellsworth Kelly, and others. In 1978, Indiana moved to an island community in Maine, where he resides today. His art continues to engage and enliven a wide range of public spaces: this fall, thirteen of Indiana’s LOVE sculptures have been installed all across London. Louisville’s LOVE appears at 21c Museum through the generosity of local collectors Jonathan and Tracy Blue, who are loaning the work to 21c Museum.
