As part of our commitment to making contemporary art a part of daily life, 21c Museum Hotel Cincinnati is partnering with Visionaries and Voices to present free monthly art classes in the gallery spaces at 21c.

This month’s Teaching Artist is Deondre Hyde. Hyde’s paintings are managed with a deft economy of means. In no uncertain terms, process is evident: lack of refinement (in terms of attention to observational realism) and awkwardness lend to its character and forge a contemporary realism in the vein of a Paint By Numbers kit. Form and color have been reduced to their most basic to fabricate architecture of flat, opaque shapes that lock the composition together tightly like a puzzle creating a landscape where the myth of being famous can take center stage. Formal qualities of restrained decadence in both patterning and color make buoyant use of concepts like longing and spiritualism, buttressing the conceptual by providing the structural skeleton on which the composition hangs. And if all the creative energy makes you thirsty, our friends at Metropole are shaking up some specials on their crafty cocktails (just $8/each) and are offering $5 local draft beers for class attendees.
