The Art of Cinema: Dinner & Movie Night at 21c Chicago

FreeThroughout the month of November, 21c Chicago will screen films by artists whose work is currently on view as part of and highlights a trope within 21c’s current exhibition, Pop Stars!.
Friday, November 4th: The first feature film, Nowhere Boy, is a 2009 British biographical drama film directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson in her directorial debut. Photographer and filmmaker Sam Taylor-Johnson’s video piece, After Van Halen, is on view in Gallery 6.
Friday, November 11th: The second screening will feature Kehinde Wiley: An Economy of Grace. This film follows the artist, Kehinde Wiley, as he steps out of his comfort zone to create a series of paintings of women for the first time. Wiley, known for having painted President Obama’s portrait in 2018 for the National Portrait Gallery, has two artworks on view in 21c Gallery 1, Akilah Walker a bronze sculpture and Portrait of Bintou Fall, a painting from the series profiled in the documentary.
Friday, November 18th: The third screening is Portrait of a Lady on Fire (winner of Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Screenplay), a 2019 French historical romantic drama film written and directed by Céline Sciamma, starring Noémie Merlant and Adèle Haenel. Set in France in the late 18th century, the film tells the story of a lesbian affair between an aristocrat and a painter commissioned to paint her portrait.
Join 21c Chicago’s Museum Manager, Juli Lowe, at 5pm for a tour of the exhibition and learn more about the artists and their artworks prior to the screening. Wine be served. Lure Fishbar will offer special menu items in conjunction with this event (advance purchase not required, but encouraged).
