See Chicago Dance Screendance Club featuring film by Cat Mahari

October 18, 2023 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Join See Chicago Dance at the 21c Museum Hotel Chicago on October 18th for first ever in-person  Screendance Club, a radically casual watch-party and discussion of short dance films. Different from a typical talk-back, Screendance Club aims to create an environment of open conversation and exploration–with artists, filmmakers, and viewers on an equal footing. SCD writers curate and facilitate conversations on viewing and interpreting dance on screen.

This installment of Screendance Club features Cat Mahari’s blk ark. Mahari offers the impossible manifestation is a multi-modal performance-based work consisting of live performance, live scored film, and architectural installation exploring Black anarchist practices through Hip Hop spillage.  We call forth play as open-ended exploration, co-ordination and voluntary collaboration in relating. With this we map a way forward, maybe touch a new world.

By examining personal marks and socio-genealogical maps, she explores inner and outer environments. Her upcoming film Sugar in the Raw is an exploration of Blk intimacy, trust, and touch. In 2021 she was named the City of Chicago Esteemed Artist Awardee in Dance and a 2021 3Arts award in dance. Her works include the Afrofuturist Krump film Imprints & Traces, and multi-disciplinary performance BAM! for which she received a CSF Generative Performing Artist Fellowship. BAM! is an immersive ensemble work, focusing on Blackness, Amerikkka, and violence. Her post-disciplinary work, the mixtape series violent/break vol i and vol ii, has received national and international development support at Brink Festival (London), High Concept Labs (Chicago), and Imir Scene Kunst in Norway.
