Metropole gets gangster for Repeal Day

On December 5th, 1933 something wonderful happened in the midst of The Great Depression.  The 18th Amendment (you know, that truly horrible one that literally ripped the booze right out of our mouths?) was abolished, giving the downtrodden people of America something to finally celebrate.  Can you imagine how bad the hangovers were on December 6th?

Each year, 21c likes to celebrate the free flow of the past several decades and will hold their annual Repeal Day celebration on December 5th.  Last year was Metropole’s first trip down prohibition way and this year we can expect just as much fun says Metropole’s Beverage Manager, Megan Kelly. “Last year was really fun and I hope this year is even better!  The guests and staff had a great time getting into the mood and everyone got dressed up for the event.”  One of the traditions of 21c’s Repeal Day festivities is that the team at the restaurant dresses up in the prohibition-era native garb, fringe dresses and tweed vests, hats and fake moles.  And it is not just the team that gets to have the fun, guests of the party are encouraged to come in prohibition drag as well – be sure to keep an eye out for complimentary fake mustaches!

While the usual cocktail list will be available there will also be a new list solely dedicated to the cocktails of the era.  Expect twists on old favorites like the Old Fashioned or Manhattan and on lesser-known libations such as the Corpse Reviver #2.  Kelly says that the menu was a team effort from Metropole’s bar team, a talented bunch who’ve been doing great things in the Cincinnati bar scene like creating their own shrubs and drinking vinegars.  Right now they have a Pumpkin Cream Soda that is….to die.

What cocktail is Kelly and the team most excited for you to try this year? The George Remus. Says Kelly, “it’s named after the famous Cincinnati bootlegger, George Remus.  It is this delicious concoction of gin, lime and spearmint and is a take off of The Southside.  It was a favorite amongst Al Capone and his fellow gangsters.”

Cheers!
