Filmography – “Solaris”

January 19, 2018 @ 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm

Free and open to the public

Art goes to the movies with 21c Oklahoma City’s Filmography, a free monthly film series at 21c Oklahoma City in partnership with deadCenter Film and the OKC Film Society. Filmography takes place on the third Friday of each month.

Join us in January for a screening of Steven Soderbergh’s cerebral science fiction mystery Solaris. This 2002 film is based on Stanislaw Lem’s acclaimed science fiction novel and had previously been adapted to the screen by Andrei Tarkovsky in 1972. However, Soderbergh stated he was not remaking Tarkovsky’s film, he instead was creating a new, more faithful adaptation of Lem’s novel. The films stars George Clooney as a grieving psychiatrist who is sent to investigate the crew of a space station orbiting a newly discovered planet, Solaris. The crew had reported strange phenomena on the station and are now refusing to return home. Clooney’s character arrives to find the crew had been traumatized by strange entities. However, these entities are neither hostile, nor benevolent, they are something else. Soderbergh uses this mystery as a way to examine not only human consciousness, but also second chances. The film also stars Natascha McElohne, Jeremy Davies and Viola Davis.
