Join us in July for a screening of “Columbus” by Kogonada. Mainly known for film essays, Kogonada’s first film is a hypnotic reflection of death and architecture. Jin (played by John Cho) is called to Columbus, Indiana, a Mecca of modern architecture, as his estranged father lays dying in a hospital. Jin reluctantly begins to explore the town of Columbus and befriends Casey (played by Haley Lu Richardson), a young woman wanting to become an architect. As Jin waits on news of his father, an unlikely friendship emerges as the pair traverse the town’s tranquil barrage of concrete and straight lines. A visual masterpiece, the cinematography in “Columbus” turns lifeless structures into some of the most important and emotional characters of the film.
