About the Exhibition

Elevate at 21c presents temporary exhibitions of works by artists living and working in the communities surrounding each 21c Museum Hotel property. Elevate provides hotel guests with unique access to the work of notable regional artists, while featuring their work in the context of 21c’s contemporary art space. To view these works, please stop by the front desk to arrange access to the vitrines on guest room floors.

On view from January – June 2019, Elevate at 21c Kansas City presents works by two Kansas City-based artists – Kathy Liao and Misha Kligman.

Kathy Liao currently resides in Kansas City, MO, and teaches painting and printmaking as an Assistant Professor of Art at Missouri Western State University. Drawing inspirations from her diverse cultural background and personal history, her mixed media work is about the intimate yet universal concept of relationships.

Liao received her MFA in Painting from Boston University and BFA in Painting and Drawing from University of Washington, Seattle. She was a recipient of various awards including the Elizabeth Greenshield Foundation Grant, Artist Grants from Anderson Ranch Arts Center, Vermont Studio Center, and Jentel Artist Residency.  Her works have been exhibited nationally in Boston, New York, Los Angeles, Seattle, and Kansas City.

Soviet-born artist, Misha Kligman, immigrated to the United States with his family as a refugee at the age of seventeen. Kligman received a BA in Art from the Cleveland State University in 2001 and MFA in Painting and Drawing from the University of Kansas in 2009.  Kligman’s work has been exhibited in venues across the Midwest, most recently at the Elmhurst Art Museum, Elmhurst, IL.  In 2015, Kligman was awarded the Charlotte Street Foundation’s Visual Artists Fellowship. Additionally, Kligman is a founding member of Plug Projects – an art space located in the West Bottoms of Kansas City. Kligman lives and works in Kansas City, MO.
