21c Salon: A View from Home

August 30, 2018 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

Free and open to the public

A persistent question in most discussions of biennials and cultural festivals is how to achieve the ideal balanced relationship between artists visiting from other places, and the participation of the artists who, in the case of Open Spaces, call Kansas City home? With those concerns leading the way,  A View from Home is a panel discussion on Open Spaces that sets out to articulate the exhibition’s connection to Kansas City’s particular history, ecology and culture. With Kansas City participating artists Jill Downen, Rashawn Griffin, Karen McCoy and the collaborative team of Trey Hock and Brent Jackson, the panel will be moderated by Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art Curator Erin Dziedzic.

Event is free and open to the public.

ABOUT OPEN SPACES
Open Spaces 2018 is a collaboration between the City’s Office of Culture and Creative Services and a private arts initiative led by Kansas City philanthropist Scott Francis, to create an event that highlights Kansas City’s arts, culture and creativity, one of 10 goals included in the City’s Arts Convergence Plan, adopted by Mayor James and City Council in 2013.

The public-private partnership includes the City of Kansas City, Missouri, a Founders Circle of large donors and arts leaders. Fundraising efforts are well underway led by Francis. Years of discussion and planning among community art leaders, artists, civic leaders, private donors and foundations, along with the visionary dedication of Francis and Mayor James, are credited for bringing Open Spaces to life.
