Please join us for the opening celebration of The SuperNatural on Friday, September 15, 2017. The reception begins at 6pm, followed by a conversation between visiting artist Chris Doyle and 21c Chief Curator Alice Gray Stites.

On opening night, The SuperNatural will also occupy the exterior of 21c Durham: Chris Doyle’s Rondo, a digital animation that combines elements from the natural world with the stained-glass designs of Louis Sullivan, will be projected onto the building from 7pm to 9pm. 21c is grateful to Kontek and Panasonic for making this special event possible!

About the exhibition
In these still and moving images of land and cityscapes, and in the taxidermy and fabricated figures of The SuperNatural, nature meets technoculture, and the new natural is both organic and artificial. Invoking past and future in a critique of the present, these paintings, photographs, sculptures, and videos document observed, current realities while referencing the aesthetic traditions of 19th and 20th-century art. Influenced by Romanticism and Surrealism, science and commerce, these artists envision how the dreams and detritus of the industrial era have generated the promise and peril of the digital age, and explore the potential for adaptation to both the visceral and virtual realities of the future.

About the artist
Chris Doyle is an interdisciplinary artist based in Brooklyn, New York. His recent work explores the cultural construction of landscape. He has exhibited widely at venues in the U.S. and internationally, including at the Brooklyn Museum of Art, Queens Museum of Art, P.S.1 Museum of Contemporary Art, MassMoCA, The San Jose Museum of Art, The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, The Tang Teaching Museum, The Wellin Museum of Art, Sculpture Center, The Brooklyn Academy of Music, and as part of the New York Video Festival at Lincoln Center and the Melbourne International Arts Festival.

His temporary and permanent urban projects include commissions for the U.S. Embassy in Sarajevo, Bosnia, the U.S. Ambassador’s residence in Stockholm, Sweden,  as well as for Melbourne, Australia, and Edmonton, Canada; within the U.S., he has received commissions from Culver City, California; Kansas City, Missouri; Tampa, Florida; Louisville, Kentucky; Austin, Texas; Times Square; and, most recently, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Wave Hill in New York City.

He is the recipient of a 2014 John Simon Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship and the 2014 Borusan Contemporary Art Collection Prize. His work has also been supported by grants from the Creative Capital Foundation, New York Foundation for the Arts, NYSCA, and the MAP Fund.

He received his Bachelors degree in Fine Arts from Boston College and his Masters in Architecture from Harvard University.
