We are thrilled to welcome you back to travel! As you prepare to hit the road for your next adventure, you’ll find the world a little different from what you remember, but don’t worry, we’ve put together a list of our favorite local spots to help ease all of your planning woes. Here’s our guide to the Durham community for your upcoming visit…
Whether you prefer savory or sweet, you will find you don’t have to venture far to start your day the right way. Wake up with buttery biscuits & crispy chicken from Rise or indulge in sweet pastries from Ninth Street Bakery. Not much of a morning person? You do you, with a coffee to-go from Beyú Caffè (pronounced, “be-you”).
Once you’ve filled up on your brunch favorites, get outside and live like a “DURM” local. Take a break from the city and explore the forest-like trails of Duke University – run along Al Buehler cross-country trail or soak up the scenery of Sarah P. Duke Gardens. Or discover historic mills and waterfalls at Eno River State Park.
Enjoy fresh seafood and regional dishes prepared by chef Thomas Card of Counting House, then continue to support the local food scene and dine with some of our neighborhood partners. Wanting more fresh seasonal fish? Stop by Saltbox Seafood Joint. Make a reservation at Mateo Bar de Tapas, housed in the old Book Exchange building, and indulge in flavorful small plates or grab a slice of Neapolitan-style pizza from Pompieri Pizza. Grab to-go and head to the historic Lucky Strike water tower at American Tobacco campus or Forest Hills Park for a cozy picnic. Compliment your local cuisine with a beer from Durty Bull Brewing Company or a cocktail from Bar Virgile. Durham restaurants are re-opening daily so keep up with the latest news with this resource from Discover Durham.
Venture outside the city to our neighbors in Raleigh (just a quick 30 minute drive away!) to check out the craft brewery scene, including: Crank Arm, Big Boss, Raleigh Brewing Company and Bond Brothers Beer Company. Find more breweries with The Beer Travel Guide. Got a sweet tooth? Visit Videri Chocolate Factory and find tasty bean to bar selections in organic nut free, gluten free, and vegan options. Shop local and artisan goods at DECO Raleigh (schedule time to shop ahead of arrival).
Last, but not least, be sure to take home a little piece of our city with you with a graphic tee or DURM™ sweatshirt from Runaway.
